SOLASTALGIA - 2024, Bodhi Khaya Artists residency

"One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds."
- Aldo Leopold -

'Solastalgia' is a land art installation that embodies the profound sense of ecological grief, expressed through five clay vessels crafted from locally harvested wild clay. Each vessel represents a stage of grief—denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance. The vessels are placed within a circular arrangement of natural materials found on the surrounding land, symbolizing the cyclical and non-linear nature of grief. 'Solastalgia' invites viewers to reflect on our interconnectedness with nature and the emotional responses elicited by the stark reality of ecological loss and transformation. Through this installation, I aim to create a space for contemplation, healing, and a deeper understanding of our relationship with the natural world.

SOLASTALGIA II - 2025, GLEN CARLOU GALLERY, KLAPMUTS, SOUTH AFRICA

'Solastalgia II' reimagines the original land art installation Solastalgia which was created at the Bodhi Khaya Artists Residency in 2024. It maintains the core exploration of ecological grief while adapting its form to a new context. This iteration preserves the five clay vessels which symbolize the stages of grief—denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance. However, their placement is reinterpreted within an enclosed gallery environment, where locally harvested natural materials have been thoughtfully curated and arranged to reflect the cyclical and non-linear nature of grief.

In this new form, 'Solastalgia II' continues to serve as an emotional and contemplative space, inviting viewers to engage deeply with their connection to the natural world and the realities of ecological transformation. The gallery setting introduces a new dimension of contrast, positioning the organic elements of the work against the artificial constructs of an indoor environment. This duality further emphasizes the fragility and resilience of the natural world, while offering a space for reflection, healing, and a reimagined understanding of our relationship with nature.
